Default DW788 Woes

My DW788 just started blowing fuses (3 amp) (Type 1 from 1997)
Last year replaced the motor $189.00.(made in japan)
The year before replaced the circuit board and rheostat. ($60.00)
I took it apart and checked for short to ground, did not find any, the motor voltage (motor disconnected) was not proper,20 VDC to nothing.
Replaced the Circuit Board and rheostat with the old one, VDC 52 to 96,OK.
Checked brushes, OK, blew out brush holders.
Put back together.
Raised speed and voltage, 3amp fuse blows, changed to 5 amp, still blows.
Called service center... did not know or offer any techinical advice, said to bring it in ,would charge $259.99 to repair.
I suspect the motor is going again, one of the windings grounding out.
Anybody have any suggestions...would appreciate it.
I like the saw but, it is costing too much at this point.

Maybe I should offer it for parts, and buy a Hitachi.

Hey, Rob, I thought those earlier models were made in Canada ! I thought when they moved the mfg,ing overseas, they were not as good. Mine has been good to me for two years now. The switch got dust in it & I added a foot switch. Is your saw a '97 year model? If I had that much trouble with one, I would get rid of it & buy something else. Preferably made in the USA. I am getting tired of everything being made out of the country. Hope you can work something out & enjoy your scroll work again. Good Luck. Perk

The only time I have ever blew that lil fuse was when I started the saw with the arm up. If the arm is up and you try to run the saw, the fuse will blow. A simple cure for that..dont have the arm up while trying to run the saw! I assume that isnt your problem though since youve had it happen that much.Sorry I cant offer any more help than that, All of my yella saw are Type 1's too, and have been very good to me.

Dale; You got me wondering if maybe there is a linkage problem...it is possible that a jam even for an instant could cause an overload and blow the fuse...

That is exactly what mine is doing. The nut that attaches the motor to the linkage inside is a left hand thread and it tightens on start up and locks the motor and then the fuse blows. (I now have a Hegner on order)

Got to take a second and put on the old fireman's hat.

Replacing the fuse with one higher rated is a BAD idea. 3 amp to 5 amp is a 40% jump in the load and some of the wiring may not be able to handle that extra amperage.

Could be that bigger fuse will lead to a smoke test and then--you'll really know where the problem is.

Better option might be to go to a 2 1/2 slow blow.
