Default Spindle Sanders

I'm looking to buy a spindle sander in the next few weeks , any good ideas on what to look for-brand? Cost isn't an issue for one, but I know price is not always the best one. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

I bought a RYOBI at home depot. I use it on most of my cuttings to sand radiused edges. Works fine for my applications. If you are going to use it heavily you might want to invest in a more expensive model. Mine was $99.00 plus tax.

I have a ryobi spindle sander. It was right about $100 as mentioned. For a basic spindle sander, it works just fine. It definatly is not a quiet tool by any means. It is amazingly loud for what it is, but it works fine. If you can afford a better machine, by all means pass the Ryobi up, and look long and hard at the Jet one http://www.cpojettools.com/products/708404.html , as well as the Grizzly one G9922 Oscillating Spindle Sander and another upgrade from that on that site, and even the General International spindle sanders. Sorry, I dont have a link for that one though. Ive heard a lot of great talk of the Jet one although I've never used it, and for the money, I am happy with all of my Grizzly machines I have.

You may find this kinda cheap but, I took an old scroll saw that had the arm broke on it and it was not worth trying to fix for that reason so, I took the motor out and made a spindle sander. Now it don't oscalate but sands really well. Plus, it has variable speed so I can control it when sanding intricate pieces. It works great for all my scrolled pieces.

G'day Chris,
a man after my own heart mate. I to have made my own. An old washing machine motor, with the shaft protruding through a bench. Turned up a number of wooden drums, covered them with foam rubber and away she went. Unfortunately, the bearings in the motor, the second one used, are getting on the worn side, so I'm thinking of breaking down and buying a shop bought one.

Jim

I have the Jet and love it. One of the deciding factors for me was the smaller size spindles and the Jet goes down to 1/4" for the smallest spindle. Its also very quiet while it is running.

Jeff (Working for wood) talked me into the Jet when I was trying to decide on a sander.
Boy am I glad I listened to him. It has become a workhorse for me. As Tim said the 1/4 inch spindle was the clincher.

I have the Rigid OSS as well. I find the flexibility of having the belt option to be very handy. Also have used the tilt table a few times. Fairly decent dust collection as well.
