Default Excalibur problems.

Hi all.

As living in Norway this is the only way I can discuss and handle this problem. I do have an Excalibur (green) from Taiwan. The shop has sold many Excalibur 21 and have never heard about my problems or they have not got any complaints. I want to hear your idea or a comment if you do have the same or what you really think about my problems. PLEASE answer it and tell me what you think or if you have the same.
My saw has broken twice! First the arm broke on two where it is concted with the engine. And before this it had terrible vibrations. I got then a new saw. The shop has been no problems at all. Before this on the same arm broke in two inside.
Then in March the upper arm broke in two where the schrew is on both sides of the upper arm and you can see a slight movement up/down inside if you open the to. This is to tight or lose the arm conected to the front of the upper arm. This skrew make the arm in a lower or higher movement of the blade.
Now I have made some modification so the arm is not moving up or down inside the top. Vibration is not at all after this what I have done. BUT...
The blade I can never get a movement that is 90 degrees! When turning the enginge I just move the cero front to back up or down along the blade when cutting. When I cut a 1/8 piece I try to move the enginge so I have 0 just above the table. Using a 2" block this is impossible to get right. When the saw is running the blade (back/front) is moving about -1/8 on the top and anout 0 1/2" up fron the table and under the table about 1/16.
Looking at the blade from the front you se the moving of the blade quit a lot on the top and under. I have tried in steps to change this hundreds of times and till today I can't get rid of the movement. If I put the blad on top to one side and under the table to the other side it is not moving straight up and down.
I am today more frustrated then I have ever been. The Excalibur should be better then this. When the blade is down the blade has an angle front/back to excatly 90 degrees - GOOD. When I move the arm up the distanse from the blade to the square is almost 1/8"! I should think moving the engine would solve this - NO it doesn't. I have got a new arm every time it has broken so the pieces should be ok.
OK, this is in short terms what I struggle with. I am thinking about changing to HEGNER. Is this saw better compare to the Excalibur looking to my problems? I don't want answer that is estimates - I want to hear from the ones of you that see or have what I try to describe here. And beeing so far out in the woods this is the only way of getting info. Please let me know!
Thanks in advance

Wow. I have had my Excalibur 21 for over two years and not had any problems with it. You might try SEYCO. A gentleman named Ray is very knowledgeable about the Excalibur saw. He would be the best person I know that could help you with your problems. Good luck and hope you get them resolved soon.. Ray is very good at what he dose.

Default Excalibur problems

Hi,
Thanks for reply. I have been in touch with him. And I got to learn about turning the engine. But this does not help.
How about my explanation how the blade is going. Have you ever seen this on your saw? Or how do your saw goes up and down seeing it from the front and from the side.? Could you explain this to me?

Hi-----from all the folk that I have spoken to is that their experiences with the ex. is that when it was manufactured in Canada it was a great running saw-----but once they started to make it overseas then there was all kinds of problems ----I believe that they degraded the quality a great deal---------again in my opinion it has far too many moving parts ------suggest that if you can swing it then by all means get yourself a Hegner ----after all they are just around the corner from you and the quality is top of the line-------my Hegner has never required any sort of repairs other than the normal wear and tear items-----------it runs as good as the day I purchased them many many years ago------------and ther service is also best around--------------my two cents worth-----------all the best and happy scrolling-----------Tom

Ok, Tom.
Thanks for your reply.

I need to think about this very seriously as of today I am satisfied how the saw works. But the quality is as you say something else. In fact the Taiwan factory is not the same as a western one. Sad to see this fact as the Excalibur is a very new way of how a saw is working.
When I wanted to buy a new one I looked at Hawk and Excalibur but both are gone with the wind to something not good.
Lets hope we will be moving the factory back and make the good again. But my thoughts goes more and more for a Hegner.

I doubt the money is that important. I understand many have other saw but I asked also how blades are running when you look at your own saw from the front and from one side. OK, I doubt I get any further - but then the Hegner will be my next one. Seems that everyone is far much satisfied about that one. And when I was in USA in June I saw many of them.
Thanks again

When I look at the blade on my saw it runs perpendicular to the table from the front and from the side it moves a little forward of center.

G'day Steinar,
I would have replied earlier but had to give your problem some thought.
I have an Excalibur, and was far from happy with it when I first bought it.
After playing around with it and tweaking this and that, it's become an OK saw.

Looking at your blade from the front, there should not be any sideways movement.

I set my table square to the blade, then placed a dial gauge against the side of the blade about 1" up from the table. Using a screw driver in the end of the engine shaft I turned the engine and noted the difference. You can get small left to right adjustments, by adjusting the grub screws on the blade clamps in and out. If this is not enough to rectify the problem, you can spring the arms by putting slight sideways pressure on them until you get the blade running true.

The engine can be rotated further than the slots would have you believe. There is another set of holes for the mounting bolts behind the flange.

Once again I used a dial gauge , but this time against the back of the blade.
Again, use a screw driver, in the end of the engine shaft and turn the engine taking note of the readings at the arms high and low points I had the gauge set about 1/2" above the table for this adjustment. Then rotate the engine housing until both high and low are as close to 0 as you can get.

When this saw falls of the perch, I think a Hegner, will be my next one. Hopefully this won't happen for quite a few years to come.
