Refering to the thread of someone needing a very small forstner style bit...I have a question for all. I'm from the old school and a 'forstner' bit are those with a spur center and a wide wiping type blade radiating out from the spur to the edge of the bit...NOT the tooth style they sell now as a forstner bit. Does anyone make a set of the old style above 1" without getting into the tooth style bit?

Pop, I believe you are talking about a spade bit. Don't think they make them larger than 1". Check out Lee Valley Tools - Woodworking Tools, Gardening Tools, Hardware They have just about any kind of bit you would need. They have the forstner bits with and without the teeth. The one with the teeth is called a sawtooth bit.

Pop, You might want to check out the forstner bits made by Colt, a German company. You can google colt forstner bit and find several places that sell them, but they are a bit more expensive than I usually pay. Popular Woodworking magazine named it the best new bit for 2008. Tom |

No spade bits are for builder and electricians to use to go thru 2x4 and the like. Back in school where I really started to get into wood working (we won't say how long ago that was but my class didn't have a history study)we had sets of the original Forstner bits. Forstner was actually the manufacturer. Anyway..I have a super set of real forstner bits that go from 1/4" to 1". The make up is that of a spade bit with set of wiping blades to make a flat cut and a spur at the ends to smooth the insertion and cleaning out process. They're about 15 years old now. A similar set would be like those sold through Woodworker Supply (item: 109-094) I found out about these just this afternoon and it pretty much answers my original question. BUT to make my thread a little clearer...they go the whole way up to 2-1/8" but don't have the saw tooth edges that the so called forstner bits have sold now by a lot of suppliers.

It seems like when they get over an inch, Pop, they go to the toothed ring style now. Not sure why. Do you find that there is an advantage of one over the other? |

McMaster-Carr industrial supply house. (link may not work!) McMaster-Carr May be hard to find in web catalog and McMaster-Carr, but they do have them. **BUT**, hang on to your wallet real tight, they are not cheap. Phil |

I think the toothed style makes it easier to cut large diameters, although the flat bottomed does not look as nice.
