Hi: I just purchased a scroll saw and with that came a 5" pin blade. I understand that a pin blade is not good for inside cuts that have no external leads into the pattern. Could someone advise me as to what I could use to make these internal cuts. (I can not afford another scroll saw) Some of the wood is 3/8 thick other pieces of wood are smaller. If there is a pin blade for the smaller cuts, where can I purchase it. Also, how do you cut the wood so that there is a place to put the blade through. (Please forgive my terminology and reference. (I am new to using a scroll saw). Many Thanks, Larry Last edited by cowjuice; 07-06-2009 at 09:25 PM. |

Hi cowjuice, you need to drill a hole in oder to thread the blade for an interior cut. As long as the inside cuts are not too smal you can sometimes squeak by with a pinned blade. Something else you could do is pull the pin from the blade, that will make it thinner and will allow you to thread it through a smaller hole. Then when you need to attach the blade to the upper clamp you can thread a safety pin in its place. There are also replacement clamps for many scroll saws available as aftermarket addons.. If you do a search for bladeclamps on the forum you should find more info.

What kind of saw do you have? some already come that can do pinned and pinless. My hitachi came with a couple pinned blades, but also takes pinless. Ben

One thing that I have done is file the pin down so that I won't have to drill such a big hole to put it through. You could try to punch the pin out. If you do that, I hope you have better luck than I did. The blade broke every time I tried it, but I know that there are others on this board who can do that without breaking the blade. Don't worry about being unaware of the terminology. We were all new to this at some point. I suppose I am new again since I haven't scrolled since October. lol I need to get out there and practice again soon before I forget all I learned. Rev. R. Farrier |

I have a 16" craftsman that had pined blades. I bought the conversion kit and it works great. but before i pushed the pin out and feed the blade into the hole then put the pin back in. this is a lot of work. but it can be done. this was cut doing this.

Welcome back Rev. Redmond, glade to see you back. As far as pinned blade go I never could get the pin out of the blade. But back when I had that saw all I made was bird houses. Some of them were very strange looking bird houses..

The easy way to get the pin out is to drill a tiny hole in a piece of steel a hair bigger than the pins diameter. Lay the blade on that steel with the pin in that hole, and gently tap on the pin with a hammer to crack it loose, and it should come out real easy then. Then, when you install the blade through the drilled hole for the blade, use a safety pin in the top blade holder in its place.
