Default Drill bit sharpeners.

G'day all,
Just wondering if any of you good fellows, and ladies, use a bit sharpener.

I don't need one as I sharpen all my bits by eye on the grinder, but I thought one would make a great gift for Dad.
Those who have been around awhile, will know that he's blind, but loves his woodwork.
When I was visiting, a few weeks ago, he commented on his tins of blunt bits.
I sharpened some for him, but being a retired fitter, I feel that he is frustrated at not being able to see to sharpen them like he used to.

If there is a sharpener out there that, you think may suit, I'd be ever grateful for your opinions.

John
I have the Journeyman 400 Drill Doctor......it works very well and you can dress split points with it. I would get another if this one every breaks.
Here's a link to the web site.

Drill Doctor

I don't know if they still make the 400.

I also have a drill doctor - works great and relatively easy to use.

What a bout brad point bits? Most of my bits are brad point and I cant see how the Drill Doctor could help them. I also have a collection of Forester (did I that spell that right?)bits. And Spade bits... I know, I know, I am asking the impossible of one tool.

Pete
The Drill Doctor I have won't do brad points, spade bits or Forstners, just twist bits.

John, I have the 250 Drill Dr. which I don't believe they make anymore. Great tool, no more dull bits in my shop. Won't do the tiny ones though, I touch them up by hand.

I have the $99.95 DD500X one that works very good for regular drill bits .
The DD750X for $139.95 says it will sharpen split points but does not mention brad points. If anyone knows for sure that it will sharpen brad points I would get one. I can not imagine how it can do that.
Drill bits in singles are getting expensive . The Drill Doctor pays for itself in a reasonably short time rather than replacing bits especially if drilling steel with HSS bits which I often do .

The Drill Doctor works very well for me. I think Dad would be able to secure the bit in the holder by feel. After that he would simply rotate the bit the same amount of passes for each side of the bit. The Drill Doctor gets my vote.

I've never sharpened my drill bits. I've never noticed they need sharpening. They drill holes and don't burn the wood. What else could I ask for. (smile)
