G'day Jerry,
The thumb screw is two parts. If you take it out, and look at the end you will notice that there is a rotating end. Hook your finger nails under this and pull it out of the screw body.
Wash the hole in the screw out with a bit of thinners or turps. Spray a bit of WD40 on the insert, after wiping it and reinsert. Wipe of any excess WD40 and give it a shot. The idea is that this piece should stop rotating when you put pressure on the blade, thust allowing you to tighten it up without the blade bending, like yours is.
Hope this helps you out.

If JOHNB method does not work (It worked for me).

Make sure the set screw is out far enough to touch the blade.

I have noticed that if I tighten the thumb screws and miss the blade it can turn the set screw.. It takes many times of doing that before it is noticed.

I have a thin piece of plastic that I use to center the set screw and the thumb screw, before I adjust the table to square.

What I am trying to say is make sure the blade is in the center of the opening.

You folks are a wealth of information and I have already learned more from this forum than from my DW788 owners manual.

Cannot thank you enough!
