Default Sanding can be fun

Using the inflatable drum sanders to shape and sand my intarsia pieces, makes sanding fun. There is a powerful small sander called Guinevere from King Arthur's tools that takes off just the right amount of wood. Each piece is very smooth. The time I save using the sander, gives me more time to create and sell. Guinevere is a must have tool for intarsia fans.

I would love one, but it seems pricey. Also, it does not come with a kit designed for intarsia (longer drums).

The rpms seem too fast on it for intarsia sanding. Most (including JGR) recommend 1725 RPM for intarsia and this one is 3600rpm...seems way too fast.

I did some research on it awhile back and by the time you get all the accessories - way too much $$ for me.

I'm not familiar with the tool in question. Speed is certainly an issue because more speed means burnt wood, and it is a safety issue if sanding small pieces because if something happens, you damage a hand or even just launch a piece of wood that can harm you or something in the shop. Slower speed actually removes wood faster, that's a fact. The slower the paper moves, the more the grit digs in and does it's job. Just like I promote slower cutting speed actually cuts faster and more effective, it's just a matter of practice when changing your ways.

I thought things flew when sanding with 1725 rpm...imagine how far you could launch pieces at 3600 !

Grizzly Tools sells a unit that comes with 2 drum sanders and a flap sander. For $199 its a very good tool for intarsia, I have the older one with just the 2 drums and it is the tool most used after my scroll saw.

Hmm, the only one I could find was this one;

This one is 239.00, so I would be interested as well in the one for 199.00 if you could post a link Alan. Thanks.

Can you use a variable speed switch on the sander to slow it down like the ones they have for routers.
