Hello Everyone, I have a bench grinder that I very seldom use, so I've been thinking of converting it to a drum sander. Here are some specs about it. It is a 3/4 H.P. with 1/2" shafts. It runs at 3450 rpm's. My questions are, Is that too fast for a sanding drum? Also, the shafts are threaded. Is it possible to buy drums to fit a threaded shaft? I looked in a Rockler catalog and as far as I can see, the drums they sell aren't threaded. They seem to be held in place with a pin. I don't want to spend money on a set of drums if they won't work on this motor. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. El |

I know someone will know but you can call rockler. They are always willing to give advice. Call Us - Can't wait? Give us a call, and our trained support staff will be happy to help you. Call 1-800-279-4441. (Note orders can be made 24 hours a day, however, technical support and other assistance is only available during normal business hours - central time).

That seems fast for me. Yes they do make drums that mount on shafts but the shafts need to be longer than what is typical on a grinder. At 3450 the drums have to be very balanced or they will vibrate like crazy.

Tons of information. Gotta be able to make an informed decision now...right?

Thanks for the advise, guys. But I think I will abandon the idea of converting the grinder. I just thought that as long as I seldom use it for what it was intended for....... I have a set of drum sanders for my drill press and I made a couple of sanding mops. I'll just stay with those. Again, thanks. El |

Fnd an electrical supply house in your area and ask them for a regulator. Yu will e able to control the speed with a dial that way you can slow it down If you need to. As for the drums someone else needs to chime in on that part.
