Default Wood burning tool

I want to buy a good one but don't know what to look for. The one I have takes forever to heat up, then I have to press really hard to leave a burn mark. It's a cheapy and that was okay when I got it cause I never used it much. Now I want to use it on some of my Intarsia and this one just won't cut it, or burn it.
So can anybody recommed one that they are using that works well. Or maybe you have one like mine you can tell me to avoid.

TIA

Mike

I have a Colwood woodburner. I am by no means a pro at using it,in fact, I am FAR from a pro at it. The Colwood woodburners are pretty popular, they have a few models to fit most budgets. Another good one is Optima.

Thanks for the info. Been looking a a dremal one (guess they make anything). It is by far the hottest of the ones that list temps of the pens, 1,050 f. Think I will look some more before I decide.

I have a Sabre wood burning system from Detail Master. I love it even though I very seldom use it. I have a tendency to buy a little more than I think I need because it is easier not to use something you have than to use something you don't have. Here is their address. Detail Master Online
Hope this helps.

I agree with Buzz. I too have a Sabre detail master IV. Very nice working unit, quick heat up, multiple tips available, and adjustable heat settings (very important). I've had mine for 8 years and had no problems. Of course lately it's only used for signing work.

Happy huntin'!

I WAITED patiently for the Lord; And He inclined to me and heard my cry.
He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay,
And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.
He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God;
Many will see and fear
And will trust in the Lord.

Mike there is going to be a scrollsaw picnic in Denton Texas on April 17 & 18th and there is a seminar with Orchid Davis on woodburning. She is really good at this and sells the machine and nibs that she uses. I was at her seninar last year and got a lot out of it. Hope to see you there.

Thanks for all the info. I have looked at all these and now I have to choose. Thanks for the invite Sawdust-granny but that is a little to close to Dallas for my taste.

I bought the Colwood kit, with the dedicated pens. I didn't want to be changing tips all the time. So far I am very pleased. I think there is a burning section in the Fox Chapel wood carving forum.
