I'm about to start my first relief carving project. The book I'm using recommends using Jelutong wood. Does anyone have a recommendation for an online site for buying wood?

Hi, Here's my two all-time favorites. Heinecke Wood Products Dale & Tim Heinecke 76 - 27 1/2 Avenue Cumberland, WI 54829 (715) 822-8642 and Slim's Woodshed Slim Maroushek P O Box 594 Harmony MN 55930 (507) 886-3114 or slims_ws@means.net They are reasonable, have good wood, and are great to do business with. They have various kinds of woods. Donna T |

Donna, Thanks for taking the time to respond to my question. I'm looking to make or buy a workbench for relief carving. Any suggestions? Regards, Brian KJ |

Hi Brian, Well, it depends on what you mean by workbench for relief carving. *If you mean something to hold your relief carvings while you carve at the kitchen table or at a shopbench, then you probably just need the pattern for a bench hook. *You can make one with a piece of plywood that's 12-14' square. *Then you attach a piece of 1' wood to make a side rail and attach it flush to two adjoining sides. *(If you are right handed, you will put it at the top and left sides) Then on the underneath side ( of the edge closest to your belly--without a rail on the top side) you put another 1' strip of wood. *When you put this contraption on your table, this lip fits off the edge of the table and keeps it from moving forward as you carve your relief. *By having the bottom and right sides open, it allows you to carve wood that's bigger than the 12 or 14' of your bench hook. * I hope you can figure out what I mean. *This is what most of us in my neck of the woods use to hold our relief projects as we are working on them. If buying a carving table is your plan then check out the Veritas Carvers Bench at Lee Valley Tools. I received one as a birthday gift this year from my bride, and it is great. Ric http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.a...tegory=1,41637 |
