Thanks all. I didn't make it down to Woodcraft and didn't make a decision except not to make a decision yet. Mike: I'm in Redmond (err, I live in Redmond. Unfortunately I'm still at work now. Waaaaaaah ) Paul & Rolf: I'm not sure I need more than 21" depth, but I've come close on several pieces now (yet another over the weekend), and I can imagine needing more. As Rolf said, working that large means it can swing that far away from the saw as well. It's not a fun length to be working at, but would be better to be able to do it in one pass than to have to take two or three shots from different directions to avoid hitting the saw. I definitely would make use of the extra capacity for compound cutting, if it's real and usable. I'm going to bite the bullet and try tilting my current table to see what bevel cuts with the piece tilted are like. I'm intrigued by inlay, but haven't actually tried it. Rolf demonstrated in the inlay thread that it's possible to do this well on the Hawk. TheMediaBoy: thanks for the word on Woodcraft and General's support. Stuff can go wrong with anything - the real test is how it's dealt with. Janette: thanks for the comments. That vibration sounds like the problem that several people have posted about but which has been fixable via some sort of mysterious adjustments. It is somewhat concerning that the demo model isn't set up correctly, and that suggests that it may be difficult to get help fixing things from your store. I don't know how it would be at the Seattle one, but I don't think there are many scrollers on staff there (but you can't spin in place without bumping into a turner )The best advice is to find some to play with. Anybody with either (or both? ) of these in the Seattle area want to run a demo?--Rob |
