I would go to Klingspore and buy one it is a lot simpler Klingspor's Woodworking Shop, klingspor's,Klingspor's,woodworking, supplies, tools, proxxon, disc, sanding sleeves, sandpaper, belts Or buy this kit. I have it and it has paid for itself many times over. Pneumatic Sanding Drums - Rockler Woodworking Tools

I bought a drum sander from Grizzly tools years ago. It has neumatic (sp ?) drums, I have 3 of them. 3,4 and 6" by 6" wide. After my scroll saw it is the most used tool I have. I have several belt sanders from 1" to 6" wide and up to 48" long and yet it is the drum sander that works for me. I am planing on getting a new one on my next trip south. the new one comes with 2 drums (3 and 4") and a flap sander. With a 1 hp motor it has lots of umph and for $200 it is a good deal.

G'day Tony, I have made a few sanding drums. This how I do it. Turn a hunk of timber down to the circumference you want, then drill a hole through the centre for a bolt. I use mine either in the drill press or on a home made machine. I then route a groove about 6-10mm wide and 2-3mm deep down the length of the cylinder. Cut a piece of aluminium to fit into this groove and drill and countersink 2 holes in the alli. Wrap a piece of insertion rubber or high density foam around the cylinder starting at the grove and ending at the groove. Glue this on with contact adhesive. Now all you have to do is wrap a piece sandpaper arounf the cylinder starting from the far edge of the groove and overlapping to the near edge. Place your piece of Aluminium over the paper along the groove and screw down. The screws will pull the paper into the groove and lock it in place. Hope this gives you some ideas, If you can understand it. If you would like I can take some pics.

Hi Tony - heres the one that came via John from his dad 's idea. It serves me well if you can splash out on a sanding belt of a belt sander. I made this one using disc's of high density foam sandwiched between 2 plywood disks. Its 6" diam. has a 1/2" diam. threaded rod as its core with a bottom adjustment nut with lock washer to pull or slacken the plywood discs together It works well but a couple of things I would change next time around a) replace the foam with 1" thick medium density rubber. That way when you pull the wooden discs together to expand the rubber discs outwards to tighten their contact on the belt they will still spring back to the original shape when you slacken back the screw later b) make the wooden discs a little smaller so they dont get in the way when you are sanding big pieces at an angle to the face of the belt Note I have also used this mounted horizontally on an improvised lathe to good effect and for some jobs its definitely more comfortable to use this way
