Default DW 788 Table Pivot

I was having some rattling noise coming from my DW788 and I would hit the table and it would stop. I finally got tired of it and took the table off the saw and the pivot point was covered with gunk. So I got some mineral spirits and cleaned the pivot, the back of the table, and inside the pivot socket. Then I put some light machine oil on it and put it back. The saw is quieter than ever.

I had not thought of that for a maintenance item, but I think I'll take it apart once every six months or so and do that little bit of cleaning.

Good tip! My DeWalt makes so many noises, I never know if it's going to drop dead or fall apart! thankfully it has done neither yet. Some noises come and go. Every once in awhile I'll go around and tighten everything but have never had teh nerve to take it apart. Is there a way to oil what needs oiling without dismantling anything?

Hi Jim,

Great tip. I never would have thought of that area being a source of noise.

Janette, This one is awkward, but easy. The table probably weigh's 40 pounds, but it's one screw to remove, and it's the knob that you use to change the angle on the table.

Take that off, and there is a spacer underneath it. Take that off too.

Pull the table toward you and get ready to heft the thing.

put it on a workbench or someplace flat with the cutting side down.

You will see the pivot is about 3/4 of an inch long and maybe 3/8 of an inch in diameter. There is a o-ring on it, probably to provide some friction. I cleaned this entire pivot with mineral spirits, then went to the table and the back end of the table where the hole is for the pivot was gunky too. So I cleaned that and inside the hole.

I put some light machine oil (gun oil) on the pivot and put it back together.

It was very easy, the toughest two parts are 1) the weight of the table and 2) the screw for the knob is not tightly secured so it can be pushed inside. I got the table on it. then grabbed it with a knife so the knob could start on the threads, and off we go.

Of course, square the table, tighten it down and off ya go.

G'day Jim.
I had the same problem with my DeWalt. I put an "O" ring on the spigot. That silenced the beast.

I am thinking a 55 gallon drum filled with oil and just dip the thing.

JohnB, you have a "spigot" on your saw? What comes out of that spigot when you turn it on????
