Default bench sander selection

Hi all. First let me say how much help you have been. This place is a wealth of information. What a blessing it has been. My needs are based on a starting a small business designed to make boxes and scroll work...mostly intarsia as well as some custom furniture. My customer base will be tourism during the summer. as I've recently moved to the NC coast.

Based on info obtained here I have ordered (and anxiously await the arrival of) an excalibur ex-21. Also purchased Coyote software, a rigid oscillating spindle/belt sander, patterns, books, and a flex drum sander w/o motor.

My question is in regards to sanding mops and flex drum sanding. I'm looking for an economical motor that runs around 1750 rpm that can handle both of these. I've seen grizzly's unit and I'm also considering a Delta variable speed grinder converted over to hold them. I noticed the grinder has "quick release" chucks and I'm not sure exactly how they work... could be my solution. Anyway all suggestions are greatly appreciated and thanks for the wonderful content you all have made possible on this site!!!

I WAITED patiently for the Lord; And He inclined to me and heard my cry.
He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay,
And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.
He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God;
Many will see and fear
And will trust in the Lord.

Welcome to the NC Coast.I am in Sea Level - Carteret.I do most of my scrollsaw project sanding on a Dremel drill press with a cotter pin with sandpaper on it.Alot of people have said that a sandaflex works good in a 1/2" drill mounted to a table.I saw a drum sander mounted on a spindle powered with a 1750 motor with belt drive and it worked great.Tony

The quick release on the Delta grinder is not a chuck (if it is the same as mine) It is a cam lock nut to make the installation of a wheel tool less.

When I built my V-Drum sander I needed a 1750 motor. I wrote the company and they recommended, much to my surprise, Harbor Freight. I don't usually buy from them, but they did have it. Well, they had it on-line. The people at the local store said they didn't carry those in-house because there wasn't enough demand. It was right around $100. 1750 RPM, either 1/4 or 1/2 HP (I forget), and reversible. Heavy little critter, though.

Red face Thanks!

Got a used dryer motor that runs around 1725 rpms but it has no cord or cover and all that exposed copper looks scary... sooo I looked at the delta grinder and am trying to figure a way to add an adapter to the shafts to accept drum/mop attachments. May end up at harbor freight.

Thanks for the input!!!

G'day Travis,
Be a bit careful if you use a grinder.
They don't have powerful motors and rely on the centrifugal force generated by the weight of the stones.

You would have to make sure you get one with enough HP.
