I am cutting another Angel pattern like the one below..This time I am stack cutting 2 1/4" boards..One is Soft Maple and the other is Walnut.. I am wondering what your blade of choice would be to cut this stack cut? I started out using a FD-UR #1 for the smallest cutouts and then I tried bumping up to a #5..I thought it was a little strange that the #1 actually cut faster than the #5..Then I tried a #3 and that seemed to be the one that I (so far ) have stuck with...For the most part ( from blade charts ect ) the thicker wood (should) use a larger blade.. This blade thing is something I am still trying to figure out even after a year of cutting, LOL.. For the most part I get a blade and cut ok with it..But I wonder sometimes if I used a different blade if I could cut my projects faster... I also a wondering how long do you think it would take you to cut this out..I just wondered how I compare to some of the more experienced cutters.. Thanks, Kevin

Kevin, A #3 FDUR is about right for 1/2" wood. You can use the #1 for the smaller cuts, I would cover the pattern with packing tape to make the #1 easier to use. That is a good looking angel. Warren |

Yup! #3 is the blade I use for 1/2". And like Warren, I use the FDUR, but Olson's Precision Ground blades are also very good. Good work on the angel.

I also made this angel for my mother-in-law for Christmas this year. I made it out of 1/4" mahogany and after several switches of blades, ended up for the most part using a FD #3. I pretty much try at least 3 different blades on everything before I decide what to go with. Sorry, didn't keep track of how much time it took me. Did a little here and a little there. Plus I've only been scrolling for about 6 months now so my number wouldn't do you much good. Here's a picture of the one I made. Sorry, I'm not so good at taking pictures yet. Kathy |

I have also made this angel. My wood of choice is 5/8" red oak. Most of this angel I cut with a #5 reverse. That blade is my "work horse". I don't remember if I used Olson or FD. Did you change the face on the angel? I reworked it a little. It probably took me 5-6 hours to cut, but that is only a SWAG.

Thanks Everyone for your compliments..as well as answering my questions..I guess I had figured out what blade works best..I just thought it was odd that the larger blade was actually slower cutting than the smaller blade.. Scrollkat, Looks like you did a nice job..I bet your Mother inlaw loved it.. ABlade, I bet that is beautiful cut from Red Oak.. Red Oak is one of my favorites to cut.. Thanks Again, Kevin

Terry, Thanks for the compliment.. I don't think the pattern is available online, but I could be wrong..I got the pattern from the 2008 Holiday issue of Creative Woodworks & Crafts magazine.. It sure is a beautiful pattern..I gave the one pictured to my wife's Grandma for Christmas..We liked it so well that I decided to make another..But this time I am stack cutting it as I am sure I will be asked to make more yet... Thanks, Kevin
