Default Tumble Sander

Has anyone ever built a tumble sander for sanding smaller parts?
If so do you have any pictures?
I was thinking of making one from a larger plastic coffee container, the kind with the handle built in the side.

Any suggestions on speed etc.

Like a rock tumbler, it will get rid of the fuzzies and round the edges of pieces like tumbled bricks.

Come on Carl. The guy who designs Tangram puzzles, and all kinks of stuff can not come up with a tumbler? No way, I don't believe it. Eagerly waiting to see your tumbler design, and fabrication.

That sounds interesting. What would you use as a sanding medium? I wouldn't think the carborudum used in a rock tumbler would work very well. Perhaps a vermiculite with a little sand might work.

G'day Carl,
I haven't any photos, but I built one out of an old clothes dryer. A 20 litre plastic bucket fitted perfectly in the tumbler.
The speed was about right. You want it slow enough so the the pieces will tumble, not get stuck by centrifugal force.

All I did for a sanding medium was save up all my old sandpaper, cut it into about 1" squares and screw it up into a ball before chucking it in the bucket.

Carl, that sounds fascinating. I have no clue. How would you keep small frets and thin pieces from breaking? Please keep us posted on your progress.

Default Tumbler

If you could get crushed walnut shells it might work also. They sell it in gun stors for cleaning brass rifle shells but it has some type of chemical in it. if you could find it without the chemical it should work.

You might have to buy the whole nut and crush them yourself. Save the nut for your wife to do some baking with.Good luck.
