Larry, I use a router/sanding pad with my ROS. It's a cushioned beehive which holds the work in place as well as seems to protect it some.

I do my sanding on a rubber router pad, a rubber pad with holes in it. You can buy it as shelf padding at hardware stores. Your work piece stays in one place while sanding. I have a Makita 1/3 sheet electric sander. I cut a 9" X 11" sheet of sand paper into thirds, about 3 5/8" wide. The dust falls into the holes in the rubber pad or I use my ROS with the shop-vac hooked up to it. I use the ROS before I scroll the wood and the 1/3 sheet sander for the pieces I have scrolled.

I built a downdraft table using peg board for the top. I couldn't find the rubber sheeting for drawers but I did find the same stuff that is used to hold rugs from slipping on hardwood floors. By putting this on the downdraft table it really works good to hold the project while sanding it with my palm sanders and the downdraft table works great for getting rid of the dust while sanding.
