I've been thinking of buying a rotary tool. I was checking out the various dremel tools and found mixed reviews on the newer ones made in China. I came across a Proxxon rotary tool that is made in Germany, but can find no reviews of this machine. Have any of you used the Proxxon rotary tools? If so, would you tell me what you think of them.

I have Dremell tool that is over 20 years old and with the flex drive it has been a good tool for small jobs. I allso have 2 Canadian Tire units also with flexdrives . these to are ok for kight work and I have them hanging over my carving bench with small drom sanders on them. My work horse is a Fordom machine. It has a lot bigger motor and a better spped control that goes up to 35,000rpm (I think) anyway you can get different ends to clip on the flex drive. some of the ends will take a 1/4" shaft and to me that was the reason I bought the Fordom. With the 1/4" drive I can fit a huge range of tools from grinding stones to carbide burrs to sanding drums. I mostly use 2 drums, a 1X4" and 2X4" with a bunch of smaller ones. Around here the Foredom is stocked by several stores and so I can get parts easy. A Foredom is more money than the smaller ones but for me I wish I had one 20 years ago.

Thanks, Alan and Evie. You have both put me into a new price range with the Foredom tools, but it does seem to be a quality tool. Any thoughts on models or motor size and foot or dial speed controls? Is there anything else you think I should consider in purchasing a Foredom tool? I did catch your idea on the 1/4" collet size Alan. I thank you both for your help on this.

I have one dremel tool and seldom use it. It is variable speed and slows down a lot uner load unless using it at full speed. I have opted for 3 Black and Deckers RTX's from Walmart for about the same price. They are three speed and work MUCH better under load. @ $28 each, worth a try.
