Evie - you are going to love that radial saw once you get the hang of using it.
Invest in a good book on the subject and make sure you have good clamping systems, jigs and safety gear and you'll find it to be a wonderful tool.

If you check this link you'll find where you can get hold of a somewhat oldish but excellent book on the subject of radial arm saws by Mr Sawdust which is very readable and full of great advice Mr. Sawdust Presents "How To Master The Radial Arm Saw"

I had a really old Black & Decker model a few years back before I had a table saw and it was only after the motor eventually died that I considered buying a table saw. The only disadvantage for me with the RAS was it took up a fair bit of space in my very small shop and the table height was a bit too high to use as a makeshift worktop - unlike the table saw. But I really miss it.

have fun but also take care!!

X-mas early, you go girl! You should be happy with a radial arm saw. I sold mine and bought a 10" Dewalt chop saw. I have missed the larger reach the radial gives you. But you will need nerves of steel to cut your fillials with this saw. lol...
As said there are lots of books on the radial arm saw. Take the time to dial in your table and you will have a great tool. Have fun.

G'day Evie,
You did good at the swap meet.
The Drills are a good buy, for $10.00, who cares if they don't work.
But the icing on the cake has got to be the RAS. That's a lot of machine for 100 bucks.

When I owned my own business a lot of years ago, I had one and it was a great machine. You could do a lot with it.

Congrats

Cool Toy

Gee that neet , that radial saw is year is 1971-1974 model, how do i know i like to read old popular mechanix magazines, old wodworking magizines and look at the ad's, i see them on e bay all the time and only thing holding me back is the shipping, cause they go for $50 on up, but you did good girl, wtg, i got my 14 volt makita drill chuckless , 18 speeds, with battery charger and he threw in anthor one for free , becuse they smell burnt out the vents , i dont care , i use till they go , and that was two years ago, Everett.

Nice score Evie! The RAS gets a lot of negative comments on other woodworking forums I visit. I think it's because few people use them anymore as good quality table saws and compound miter saws have become readily available to the hobbiest. I've had one for over 25 years and wouldn't want to be without it, even though I have a table saw and a compound miter saw. You couldn't pry my RAS away from me.

Many years ago, Sears offered a bunch of attachments for the side arbor. You could get moulding heads, sanding drums, even a rotary planer. I've never used any of those, so I'm not sure how practical they are, but the versatility of the RAS was a big selling point 30+ years ago.
