| DeWalt 20" type 1 vs type 2 A member of the Wood Carving Illustrated message board suggested I check with this message board when I asked about the value of an opportunity I have to by a used DeWalt 20" scrollsaw for $175.
Can someone articulate the difference between the type 1 and the type 2 of this model. I am trying to find out which one is being offered.
I understand a type 1 is preferred, but if that is not what is being offered what should I be looking for in the type 2 that makes them less desirable.
Thank you in advance,
Russ |

| You will know what type it is by looking at the information plate on the motor. Type one is made in America and type 2 is made in Taiwan. The first type 2 I think had some problems but they have been fixed since and the ones they sell now are fine.
I think mainly it was the table that was not straight. Check that the plate is good and you should have a good saw.

| Russ,
The only difference between a type 1 and type 2 is the manufacturing location. The type 1's were mfg. by Sommerville Mfg. in Canada whereas the type II's are mfg. in Taiwan. After the initial move there were a lot of quality issues with them but I've not read or heard of any in quite some time so I'm guessing that those issues are behind them. $175 is a great price regardless of which type if the saw is in good shape.

| Hehehe Diane, seems we were typing at the same time. Just as an FYI, the Dewalts were never made in the USA. They originally were contracted out to Excalibur (Sommerville).

| Thanks Kevin for the info on Sommerville. Didn't know that.

It's smooth as silk, no vibration, good fit and finish and the table is flat. I noticed they added elongated holes on the table mount to add side to side adjustment. Probably because of the initial problem of the blade being off center in the hole.
I do have one complaint though. the table is not rock solid in it's mounting. What I mean is, no matter how tight I crank down the bevel knob, I can get slight side to side movement by pressing down on either side of the table.
Meaning, I can see the blade move off center in the hole by pressing down on the right or left side of the table. |

| Thank you all for your responses. They are most helpful.
I'll take a look at the saw this weekend and if it seems to operate OK I'll probably go for it!
Thanks again,

| I have one of each, and the new one is working as good as my old one did when new.
