Hello everyone! I am a new middle school wood shop teacher in need of your expertise. I am not a "scroller", so I have a lot to learn, but I would like to purchase a bunch of scroll saws for my 7th and 8th grade wood shop class. An recommendations on bullet proof, quality saws? I need bang for the buck and safety is a HUGE factor. I don't need all of the bells and whistles, just a really sturdy and safe machine. I am not sure if I am looking for bench top, or stand alone varieties. Ideas? Thanks!

As a committed Hegner fan, I hate to say it but... go for the DeWalt 788. The Hegner has far too many little components which will 'get lost'. DeWalt's are also more economic, durable and simple to use. Gill

No matter which saw you buy, if you keep a close eye on how they are treated, theres many choices out there. For $ value, features, and ease of use, I second what Gill reccomended.I would suggest finding out how much money is available for your purchase, and then contact a few various saw companies, and let them put you together a price on the quantity of saws you need.

Good point about the small parts. I appreciate your recommendation even though you are a fan of a different machine. Unfortunately, the only money I will have is what the kids give me and what I can get from grants. Gotta love public education budgets! Thanks again, Darin |

Have you thought about approaching local retailers which sell scroll saws ?Or how about manufacturers ? They may have programs which they donate refurbished saws .Just a thought . Roger |

You could try Rotary or some other service club. I saw an add a while back for factory refurbished Dewalt scroll saws. Dewalt has a return policy on all their tools. If you dont like it take it back. I think that is for 30 days. My understanding is those return saws get sold as refurbished. I just bought another new Dewalt and my first one lasted several thousand hours with no problems. Alan. |
