Hi... I'm new at this...well, I wonder if you ever get "not new" at this. I have a hunch that as they're hauling me off to the crematorium I'll ask them to hold up for an hour or two so I can try this new thing on my scroll saw. I bought some Olson PGT blades (5R-PGT), and some Olson Mach Series (3MS) to give them a try. The 5s of course are ground and the 3s are milled. I'm cutting 7/8 poplar and 3/4 cherry. I've cut the same tortoise free-standing puzzle at least 8 times for practice. Anyway, the PGT blades seem to make a lot of noise...kind of a screeching sound. The kerf isn't burned, the blade isn't upside down, and the saw doesn't seem to be stressed...they cut fine, but loud. The 3MS make hardly any sound. So far when something like this happens all I can say to myself is I wonder if that's normal. Anybody else experience this, and any thoughts about what I might be doing wrong? Cheers. Ed |

Ed-- Just a WAG (Wild A_ _ Guess), but is it possilbe that due to the shape of the blades, there may some kind of harmonic vibration caused by the blade/wood interaction. I might try going 1/8 of turn tighter or looser on the tension and see if that might change the tone or drop it out of the audible range.

Jim... Sounds worth trying, could be it. I'm off to blow the froth off a few with an old buddy from out of state, but tomorrow I'll give it a rip...let you know. Thanks for the response. Cheers. Ed |

It seems to be a surface finish issue. When I get a noisy one, I polish it a little with fine steel wool. This works very well. |

Noisy blades? Thats a new one on me. I have never heard that complaint before. I guess I will have to listen a bit more, but I rarely go over a #3.
