Default Question for Hegner owners

I've decided to go the Hegner route, but am stuck on the decision of 18v vs 22v. The cost difference isn't great, but 200 bucks is 200 bucks, and bigger isn't always better (as in the size of that grizzly bearing down on you). I have the space for either. I'd be interested in hearing from Hegner owners about the pros and cons of the two different models. Thanks for your time.

Cheers.

Ed

I'm not a Hegner owner anymore but used to be. In fact I had the 18V. What I found was that it restricted me in how large an item I could scroll.

Hi Ed
I have the Hegner 18", on a few occasions I have wished that I had gone for the 22" it all depends on the size and type of cuttings you regularly cut. I have always managed to get around the lack of throat depth on the few projects that were to big for the saw.
Graham.

I don't have a Hegner but I do have the 26" G4 Hawk. The large throat has been useful on several occasions. That said if I cut somthing that is say 4 ft round I would need to modify my belly so that I could see what I was cutting.

Go with the bigger one, you will be happy when you need that extra.

Ed, I have two Hegners. The 18" VIR and a 22" Polymax. The Polymax I have used just about every day for about 7 years and just love it. They don't show it at the shows. It is belt driven and since I am a fast scroller, I keep it on the full speed pulley. I bought the 18" a a show special for a back up saw and for a helper to use, but I have not used it for a couple years now. I agree with Mike that you may not need anything larger than the 18" very often, but the Polymax is a better saw as far as I am concerned.

Thanks for all the input. I went with the 22v.

Mike, thanks for the offer, but my son lives in Wilmington, about 20 minutes from Advanced Machinery. I visit him often, a quick trip, voila. I'll be visiting your site for blades, though.

Larry, I read good reviews about the Polymax but it's beyond my budget. I'm sure it's a great saw.

Thanks again everybody.

So now I guess I'm a scroller. Cut a hare standing puzzle out of a piece of scrap 7/8 maple I had lying around. For my granddaughter. Good thing she's only two, so she's not likely to say jeez that's a pretty crappy scrolling job grandpop. But the first few things I turned on my lathe ended up in the woodstove, so as Chief Dan George said we endeavor to persevere. It's addicting, isn't it?

Cheers.

Charlie, check our Ebay, Craigs list for someone that you can work with. Also place a call to Advanced Machinery...I bought a saw from them that was used at the shows for a great discount price a few years ago....just like new from the box.
