Default Remote control question.

I moved my home made ceiling filter into my main shop and put in a Delta unitin my smaller shop It came with a remote control and the thing is that it comes on by itself. I went out this am and had papers all over the place, on high speed it is a bit of overkill in a 14 x 10 shop. Anyway I wonder if a tv remote could do this? I know I can turn on/off both my Cyclone systems from the house.
I will put a switched outlet on it tommorrow. Just curious if any of you guys know what could be doeing this.
And no it is not that my shop is haunted.

Get rid of Vista and reload XP, things will be back to normal.

Not sure what could be causing it but my garage is about twice the size so if it keeps giving you problems sounds like it might be the right size for mine

Alan:
A couple of quick things to check.

If you have the original Delta remote, look into the front of it and see if there is an LED. That means it is an infrared (IR) capable remote. This is the most common type of TV/any remote. To double check the function of the remote, point it into the lens of a camcorder and press the on/off button. If the IR is working, you will see a flash in the viewfinder of the camcorder. (Doesn't have to be recording at the time) The view screen of a point and shoot digital camera will also work.

If it is an IR contol, you may be getting a spurious IR signal from something in the shop, most commonly from red or pink neon--even a power indicator light that flickers (maybe too fast for you to observe.) In that case, you will have to find the receiving sensor on the fan unit and put "blinders" on it so the source of the interference is blocked.

The other remote option is a radio frequency or rF unit. Set an AM radio to a blank spot on the band (static only) and press the button. You should hear some kind of noise when the button is depressed. It may a VERY brief burst of noise, but it should be audible as a change in the static.

If it is an rF remote, you should be able to turn the unit on with your back turned and the unit turned into your body. Problem with an rF remote is trying to find the source of the interference that is tripping your unit. rF interference is a ghost--especially when it is intermittent. To shield you unit sufficiently to block the interfenence, you would effectively end the use of the remote.

Hope this helps--

Jim,thanks for the reply. I bought a new receptical today that has a small light that will show if it is on. The only good thiong about the remote was the abillity to leave it on for a set time after I lock up at night. But that succer moves so much air that should not be a problem. Today I hooked all 9 machines up to the 4`dust cyclone so all I have to worry about now is the Idiot who smokes out there. Mmmm that would be me.

I have a General brand air filtration unit with remote. If we have a power outage here at home, when the power is restored, the air filtration unit automatically comes on.Any chance power to your unit was interrupted?
