I have an elcheapo 8 inch drill press at the present time. It has served its purpose for what it is. Lately I've been kicking the idea around of upgrading to a better and larger unit, possibly a floor model. Delta has a 16 1/2 inch model 17-950L that sells for around $370.00 I was curious if anyone has one or knows anyone that has one and how they like it. Also what kind of drill press do you own if any? I own a harbor freight floor standing drillpress, around $175 bucks I think. For the money, I am very happy with it.

I have a Rikon 35" Floor standing radial drill press. I've been very happy with it. Makes it very easy to drill in the center of large pieces.

I have a delta floor model. The only thing I would do different is spring for the extra bucks and get a variable speed instead of the belt and pully.

Stoney, I also have a 8" drill press, and it has worked great for me, up till now. I find I need to use some wing drill bits. and it is a bother with the hight of this drill press. I don't know about the one you are talking about, but I think I would go for a floor model also. if I had the room. not to mention, the size of bits you can use. and the power. I will watch your thread and learn from it. your friend Evie Kevin, where can I find a Rikon . radial drill press. I would love that. how far out does it reach? also it does cut angles right, what degrees, and how big is the table. and how deep is the throte? and what size motor? thanks Last edited by minowevie; 05-27-2008 at 11:09 PM. |

Stoney, I have the Delta DP 350 Shop Master 12" Drill Press that is on a stand. Not sure of the price difference but I have never needed a floor model. It is an excellent tool and I am very happy with it.

Evie, if you are thinking about a radial drill press be carefull which one you get. I had a Grizzly floor model. It had a lot of slop and flex. It was ok for very lite work, but I found it was not good for what I do. I sold it last week and good riddance. bought a new standard style. Just my 1 cent worth. Alan

Thanks to all who have replied. Hope to get some more input as I would like to be able to make a halfway educated decision. I would like to at least stay at or under $400.00 Stoney |

I think with a budget of $400 you should be able to get a drillpress that would do everything you will even need to do, and do it for generations to come. I dont really view a drillpress the same as a tablesaw or tool like that, a drill press is a relatively simple machine. Quality however, is something needed on any tool , buy the best you can with the alloted funds.

I agree with Dale. I have an old Ohio Forge Drill press I got used, about 20 years ago. Just a bench model. But built like a tank. So quality is what to look for.
