I'm kicking around the idea of getting a different scroll saw. I'm leaning toward either the Rbi Hawk G4 or the Hegner 18v or 22v. I have a Delta P-20 at the present time. The Delta has been a good saw but I have a lot of hours on it. As you probably all ready know Delta discontinued the P-20 model. My main concern is my delta going down and not being able to get parts. Naturally I,m looking for the best deal. I am not in a real big hurry. Does anyone know if they ever run any specials on the Hawk G4 or Hegner 18v or 22v? Stoney |

I am pretty sure the RBI does run occasional specials but I am not sure how 'special' they are. If you are willing to look around a bit I got my Hawk 226 VS with side table, foot switch and magnifier lamp for a tad over $700.00 on eBay. I took my time, only bid on saws that were close to new, communicated with the buyers to ask questions, understand shipping costs restrictions etcetera then set my bid limit and stuck to it. I bid on about a half dozen saws before I got one but I did not get caught up in the 'bidding war' mentality. I did use some common sense when bidding and bid low at the start, upping my bid as the current bid passed mine but staying below my limit. The saw I got I put my final bid in with 5 seconds remaining. (High speed internet access is a must!) Both the seller and I were happy with the transaction and I got a great saw for just over half the cost of a new one. The down side is no warranty but with a Hawk, you are getting a quality tool. Hope you find the right saw for you!

Stoney...I am considering selling my Hegner 18vs. I am getting into turning and have no need for two scrollsaws (keeping the EX-21). PM me if you decide to go the Hegner route.

Paul, do you prefer the Excalibur over the Hawk? If so, why?

I have had very little experience with the Hawk but noted a few differences after playing with both. Controls of speed, tension, and on/off switch on the EX-21 are up front and above the table. And then there was the tilting arm vs tilting table which was another major point directing me toward the EX-21. Both have strong points and are excellent machines IMO. But since I couldn't have, or need, both the EX-21 became my choice.

I've not used a Hegner but hear they're very well made saws. The big difference for me was the Hawk G4 allows for easy top loading and has an adjustable stroke pattern. These features, I believe, make it the most user friendly advanced design saw on the market. I bought mine just slightly used at a big savings but keep in mind that buying used, you'll lose their excellent 6 yr. warranty. I've put about a hundred hours on my G4 so far and I love it. Good luck, Ralph |
