Default Hegner 18v Noise in motor

I just got a Hegner 18 at a thrift shop for $10. When I turned it on it works great but makes crazy pinging or clanging noise. What could it be? I didn't run it for very long because I was worried about the noise and I noticed these are expensive machines. When I lowered the speed it still makes the pinging noise just slower and not as loud.

JohnnyZ,

I have the same saw and bought it used. The guy I bought it from hadn't used it in a long time so when I turned it on for the first time, it made those same noises. All I did to fix it was to oil the bearings which is very simple. They remind me from time to time that I haven't oiled them enough. Every 10 hours of operating time is recommended in the manual. By the way, if you need a manual, you can find one online.

Hope this helps.

$10?? Are you serious!!

I do not own a Hegnar saw, but I am extremely jealous of you right now. Just a guess would be the blade isn't tensioned correctly. Worst case I can come up with is the motor is going bad and needs to be replaced. If that's the problem you still got that saw at an amazing price because I really doubt a motor would be even a quarter the cost of a new Hegnar.

Congratulations on your find. I hope you get things worked out soon.

If the saw doesn't work, you could get some of your $10 back by unscrewing the blade mounting device & selling it on ebay.

If it can be fixed, you got one of the best saws there is for peanuts.

I wonder if it came on a stand?!

You can get spare parts for Hegners at advmachinery.com, btw.
