Default dust collector question

I installed some pipe and blast gates to use my shop vac it worked great but loud. I ended up trading something for a delta dust collector, it sucks, no pun intended. but i made a 4 inch circle to fit the hose than reduced it to fit my 2 inch pipe. now it does not work as well when i open a blast gate. It does work though. Any ideas why and a remedy for the problem. Since i have 150.00 bucks into my tubing and traded something for the collector, I hope I can get it to work. please help me out.

Odds are that your shop vac is not pulling the needed CFM to make the system effective. Turns in your piping as well as length will effect that as well as the low volume of air that a shop vac can pull. The new wood magazine had a very interesting article (Shop test) on dust collection systems this month. (Actually it is March 08 - why do they do that????)

The shop vac worked good, it was when i took the dust collector from a 4 inch hose and reduced it down, not it does not work as good as it does without reducing it.

Oh, sorry I see what you are saying. That is simple, 2 inch pipe will not move the volume of air that a 4" will. Very similiar to water hydrolics and friction loss.

I have a Home Depot, 6.5 hp, shop vac I use for dust collection. They have an accessory called a muffler. Will this decrease the efficiency of the shop-vac?

I installed 2" or maybe 3" hoses to the main one with a V connection. One I put above on the scroll saw- the other underneath.

I have got a 2 hp collector that makes no noise at all. But then I finally got around to building an enclosure and putting it outside my shop.
