Default Hitachi CW40 vs. Dremel 1800?

Hello!

We're brand new to scroll-sawing, and are trying to decide between the Hitachi CW40 (available locally at my homecenter) and the Dremel 1800 Scrollstation (available quickly from Amazon.com), the Dremel so-named, I guess, because they hooked up a small disc sander and flex shaft axle to the side of theirs...

I know that both aren't the most expensive, but we are on a rather tight budget these days...

Does anyone have a strong preference for either of these models?

Thanks!

Boredcutter, can you top feed with either saw? Most that purchase an economy model scrollsaw end up getting a better one later. I would save for a good one to start with. Don't really understand why they put a disc sander on a scrollsaw. Have been scrolling for 15 years and have never needed a disk sander. The Delta P-20 or the DeWalt 788 are both good saws and are near $500. You can top feed with either.

I do not know what top feeding is, nor do I have any experience with the Dremel, but I am happy with my Hitatchi. Is it a DeWalt? No. Does it work, yes it does. I too am on a very tight budget and rather than waiting a very extended period of time to buy the DeWalt, I bought the Hitatchi. Now I have only completed one project, and I found a disk sander and a small belt sander very useful! (I own a Dremel combo belt and disk sander) I also used sandpaper and small files ;-) I am sure I will need less of these tools as I aquire more skill, but I do not blame the saw for this. Just my inadequate skills.

G'day Doug,
Good On Ya Mate,
I started with Ryobi moved through a Delta and now have the Dewalt.

Once you get used to your saw you'll be amazed at what you can do.
When family and friends and friends of friends ask you to make them something, charge a little more than the wood and put it in a jar in the shed.
Instead of buying presents for birthdays, Xmas etc make something and put the difference between what you would have bought and the wood in the jar.
After a while You'll have enough for more tools and if you want a step up re-Saws.
That's what I do.
I very rarely use other cash for my hobby.

Once again, enjoy you saw.
