I know we were kidding about using your Dad's planer, but if you don't have a jointer or access to one, you may want to consider using your Dad's planer for awhile and spend your money on a jointer first. The planer and jointer go hand-in-hand to prepare and size your wood for almost any project in woodworking. This is especially true if you are planning to make furniture. I think it was Dale that mentioned getting one side of the board flat as a point of beginning. The jointer makes easy work of that task. Just food for thought...others may have better ideas.

I'd go ahead and spend the little extra for the DeWalt 735. I love mine and haven't had a problem at all. It weighs about 92lbs but its not bad. I to have a "closet" shop and have to move mine outside to use. I keep it on a stand thats about waist high and lift from there. It has 2 speeds which is good and has dbl. edged blades. When one side wears out ya' just flip them. Replacements are only about $50. Getting to the blades is a cinch. It is laid out quite well and is very user friendly. It is very compact which I'd liked a great deal and the extension table are worth the extra $40. I just broke down and bought it and haven't regreted it since because it has already paid for itself.
