Default Vega Enterprises scroll saw

I'm looking for any information I can find on this obscure saw.

As far as I can tell they only made the model 126
26" variable speed with a tilt table

A search of the net only come up with the picture of the incomplete one I just got off of ebay. And a few references to past equipment auctions.

Emailing Vega just gets an automated "call 1-800-222-8342x17"
I'm not that desperate . . . yet. Figure any parts from them will cost at least double what I paid for the saw.

The saw is nearly complete and has limited functionality
The spring tube mechanism looks like it was swapped from an old Delta and the tightening mechanism for the tube is missing. Other than that it is one sweet saw.

I'd just like a picture of what I'm trying to replace or fabricate.

Yep, that's my Vega :-)

and it's 1/3 horsepower - I'd be scared of a 1.8 HP scrollsaw.

I'm pretty sure it *is* a Delta spring assembly.
I have to wait until tomorrow to post pictures.

I've never seen a Vega spring before so don't know if it's supposed to look like a Delta.

I guess I'll call Vega just to see if the parts are avaialble - though I cringe just imagining the price. A used Delta "upper plunger assembly" recently ebayed for over $150.

One of the best resources for older saws and woodworking tools in general is Old WoodWorking Machines http://owwm.com/
You may find some help there on locating parts.

Yep, OWW is the only place I found that shows Vega Enterprises ever made a scroll saw. The Vega Enterprises site doesn't bother to mention it - hope that doesn't mean that it was an embarrasment to them. Seems to be a very nicely designed and built saw.

If I ever get this one put back together I'll add a set of images to OWW for posterity. I figure the saw could last that long.

For the really bored . . . here's the images of what's missing;

The hole for the spring assembly has a groove towards the back - no matching feature on the mangled spring tube that came with it. The tube height adjuster is missing, would guess some type of toothed shaft with matching notches on the front of the OEM tube.

The good news is that it's now fully functional.
Just took a hose clamp, oil, and selections from the big jar of screws.

Chucked up a coping saw blade and scrolled a 2X4 as an extreme test.

The bad news is that the "transmission" is nearly shot.
the bearing on the connecting rod rattles somethin' fierce.

But it was only $150 . . .

That saw must have been put through a lot of use.
The Delta saw of a similar design has an oil bath that the connecting rod sits in. It is always lubricated.
I hope you can get all the parts you need to make it work for you.
The only drawback on the Delta saw that I used was the time it took to thread blades for fretwork.
It ran smooth as silk and you could do the old nickle on its edge test. Not that I ever cut while a nickle is on the table!

Scott did you get the pictures of the tube I sent you. I took about 10 pictures from all angles.

Nope! I didn't get the pictures.
Just checked the spam filter and didn't find the email in there either.

It *was* low on oil but I don't know how low - it wasn't up to the sight plug.
It probably was never checked. I can't imagine that a high school shop would've put enough hours on it to actually wear it out - with normal maintenance.

I'll pull the internal apart when it bothers me enough. I've a friend with a machine shop and it wouldn't be the first time I made my own gaskets.

The 150 lbs of mass really helps with the vibration - I'll have to try that "nickel test".
