Does anyone here know is this air filter http://www.general.ca/pagemach/machines/10550a.html can be operated using this http://www.mlcswoodworking.com/shops.../speedcon.html to run it at a slower speed.I just got this air filter used, with hardly any use from a guy that bought it in december. Its to big for my workarea (same reason he was selling it), but couldnt pass up a great deal.Im just curious if using a router speed control would work to slow it down a little bit, hopefully making it a little bit quieter. Thanks. dale

I have one like it, and love the work it does. I don't know about the speed reducer though. Wouldn't reducing the speed reduce teh effectiveness of the unit? If it's too loud, have you thought about putting it in a cabinet instead of hanging it up? And by cabinet or box, I'm talking something like a sand table would look like. Or maybe wrap it up in soundproofing insulation? I mean if you build a box around it that wouldn't restrict the airflow too much, you may be able to reduce the noise by deflecting the airflow itself. Just a couple thought I'm throwing your way, not sure if they would work either. Regards, Marcel

I have thought about enclosing it to minimimze the sound. My biggest concern is that it is going to create so much air movement in there itll be like working in a cyclone. I was thinking that maybe reducing the speed a little would make it not quite as windy in there. I havent hung it yet, cuz I cant find my 5/16 inch washers to put on the eyebolts im mounting it with, so i really dont know how 'windy' it will seem, but thought i'd run the router speed control idea past you all. Marcel, you say you have this same unit? And if so, your thoughts on it, good and bad. Dale |

I wouldn't alter it. I'd trade you for my Jet, I think it's the 1000 model..I paid 200 for it and barely ever use it, it's way too small. It's not overly noisey and has three speeds with remote too. But I don't think yours is bigger than mine. Mine clogs too fast, the filter is only about 10x18 I'm guessing.

Thankd pop. I did get it hung, and it isnt as bad as i anticipated. The noise seems much less here compared to the guys house where i bought it. right now Im doing good with it. Ill give it a few days and see if I get any complaints from SWMBO about the soft whine noise, but its not very bad. And jeff, I will keep your offer under consideration, thank you. Dale

I had a particularly loud smoke filter i had my men hang once at one of my buildings and we wound up isolating it from the joists by using 'j' hooks and the rubber bands they use to hang mufflers and tail pipes on cars. By using the 'j' hooks on the beams and the filter body and then using the 'rubber bands' to hook the two together, it almost made the unit totally silent. Just a thought.
