I just acquired a new tool for the shop. A thickness planer!!!! Yeaaaaaa. Now I can save a bit of money planing my own wood down instead of purchasing the thickness I needed.... yippeee.

Default Great Tool Addition

Congrats Grizz! You're going to love this tool. Looks like the same one that I have, Is it the 13" model? Does a good job but makes a big mess, or it did until I hooked it up to a cyclone.

You'll be using it on all of your projects, no need to be worried about measuring the thickness of two or more boards just a couple of passes through that bad boy and they are all the same. Now go make some shavings!

I got an older 12" Delta in January from a guy in my club. $25.00 including extra blades and belts. Haven't had a chance to set it up though.
Now put a drum sander on your wish list if you don't have one.
I got a Performax 10-20 two years ago and almost everything I cut goes through it.

Hey Fred, about the sander, do you run the pieces through after you cut it? Think I'd like one but don't know if I can justify the price.

If the surface is too rough, I'll put them through before cutting with 80 grit. I've also straightened out some slightly cupped boards this way. If I ever get the planer set up I'll quit doing that. You can go down to 37 grit which they call "planer paper". I use 150 grit after cutting. When I bought mine, I believe there was a mistake in the ad since I never saw them for $399 after that!

Thanks everyone! I didn't have any plans after I got it up. So I took this ten year old board which was gross and started milling it down (yes checked it for nails and staples). Happen to be aromatic cedar and the whole house smells so nice now. And then made the boys sweep it all up. LOL

Troy, it is 13" most likely the same one. A guy near me got stuck with an extra Herc-U-Lift that fits the stand. Going to buy that from him next week.

A surface planer will change your life. Remember that scrap you saw along side of the road and didn't take a minute to pick it up. Remember that junk pallet you just thew away. It is not always going to be a great find but a lot of the times it is. (hope you got a dust collector)

Just an added note GRIZZ. Next time you are on the first tee, ask yourself; do I inhale or exhale on my backswing?
