Default Plant the Earth

Now is the time when 2010 calendars are on display. Despite the high prices and the fact that those prices will plummet after 1/1, I'm always tempted to buy now. So far I've resisted.

Karen Good is an artist that publishes a calendar or two every year consisting of very simple drawings and phrases. The pictures are ideal for color-line cutting and produce pieces with very crisp lines. I have a relative who loves puzzles but is in his mid-eighties and thus prefers simple pictures with bright color lines. Good's pictures are ideal for him, as well as small children and families (his grandkids always come to his house to help).

I just finished this one today. I haven't counted the pieces but I imagine it's around 280. It's cut along the lines of the border, flower petals, leaves and containers and the bottom stripes provide some straight-line variety.

Just some ideas for more phun..... Carter

Very nice. Thanks for posting the pictures. Yes - I've been looking at the calendars - I'll do as you suggest and wait. . . .

Thanks, folks......I counted the pieces. The number, for those of you who like useless information, is 298....and, no, I can't find two pieces that lend themselves to be cut in half.

All in the name of phun..... Carter

I haven't been as strong as you, Carter. I've bought a bunch already, although I agree that it is painful to spend so much on them. Still looking forward to the after-Christmas sales, though!

I cut a puzzle a few months ago which had 498 pieces, Carter. I really was tempted to find two pieces to cut, so I could reach an even 500, but decided that if it was meant to be 498, then that's what it should be. I didn't want to get into the habit of "trying" to reach a certain piece count. As you suggested, in the end it really doesn't matter.

Nice cutting as usual Carter. Loved the article. Lots of useful info that I didn't know. My friend Frugal says wait until the 2009 ones go on sale...or did I miss that day again?
