Default Finished a Zodiac puzzle

A Leo from the Fox Chappel book Zodiac Puzzles for Scroll Saw Woodworking by Judy and Dave Peterson. I love the puzzle patterns in this book and I highly recommend it.

This puzzle is from White Oak with a Danish oil finish. I used a 2/0 FD for the entire puzzle. I started with a badly cupped 3/4 board which after planing left me with a 1/2" board. A little narrow for a freestanding puzzle, however because the blade is so narrow the fitup is quite nice and it holds together well. I have made no attempt to round the edges as I like the crisp look of the sharp edges.

Although the book called for stainless steel and silver wire my small bits are steel brads with the heads cut off and the 2 large stars are brass with the heads intact all cut to about 3/16" long and inserted into pre-drilled holes a little less deep than that. The silver colored bits were sanded flush and the brass were not inserted until just before the finish was applied as I wanted the heads to be prominent.

Nicely done Rod! I might be biased though-------- I'm a Leo

I'm not a huge fan of the zodiac patterns in general, but I think the idea of placing the stars in the constellation is brilliant.

I cut the Orion from the magazine and after seeing your leo I have a real excuse to buy the book and cut the rest of them. Nice job and thanks for sharing.
