Smile Pediatric Cancer Fall Fundraiser Puzzles

The Cause

I frequently do fundraising events to benefit "Kids Create Hope," a foundation dedicated to raising money to aid pediatric cancer research. The reason I am so involved is because the Foundation was started in memory of my twin brother Shane, who passed away from cancer three years to this date. He was a pediatrician who spent his short career helping sick kids.

Anyhow, the goal of Kids Create Hope is to encourage kids to find ways to raise money to help other kids with cancer. Part of our fundraising involves craft sales where most things sold are made, at least in part, by kids.

In two weeks, we will be at the Lewiston Harvest Festival. I was looking for a way to help and settled on coming up with these puzzles.

The Puzzles:

Making these was easy. I simply designed and drew the outlined shapes and then let the kids color them in with bright crayons, as they saw fit. As you can see below, my son even added his own birds and a squirrel to a tree. I brought the pictures to Office Max and had laser prints made. Came home, glued them to 1/4" Poplar ply, and made some sawdust!

I tried to keep the puzzle pieces large and bulky, as younger kids will be using them (I will still advise kids older than 3 years). The puzzles contain between 22 and 38 pieces each.

Here are a few of the puzzles which will be for sale at the Festival:

Every puzzle contains one large Figural Piece. I tried to keep these simple and bulky, and not too intricate, so as to make them sturdier for young kids. This also helped to keep the puzzles easy enough to make and hence worthwhile to sell at a reasonable price.

Here is a picture of the puzzles with the Figurals out. I tried to keep things fall themed and designed a pumpkin, an ear of corn, an acorn and a maple leaf.

How adorable, and a commendable, worthwhile project. Makes ya feel good to give back huh?

What are you doing still up on the computer at this hour? You have to get to work in the morning...LOL

I'm a night owl. As long as I get my 6 hours, I'm good.

What a noble cause! Way to go Shawn!!!

I bowled with a pediatric cancer physician the past few years. He claims that there is a 90% cure rate. So your project is well worth the effort.

Well - overnight I've been thinking about your idea. So when you display them at the sale - how do you do display them? Shrink wrap them? in a box?
