Default 1st Jigsaw completed!

Okay as promised here are some pics of my first ever jigsaw puzzle.

I made a few mistakes and there were about 6 out of the 73 pieces that did not interlock..Don't know how I did that but I did.

It was a poor quality red oak plywood which I was having major problems with tear out and fuzzies on the back. I covered the reverse side with mod podge and it all but eliminated this problem so that is a hint for others in the future mod podge acts as a pretty good filler.

Be gentle but all comments are appreciated as this was definitely a learning experience but PHun!

Sorry about the quality of the pics....

Great start, Mike. What difference does it make if a couple pieces don't lock to ALL their neighboring pieces? I always have some junctions that don't lock. It makes for variety - and some confusion for assemblers who might think they have extra edge pieces.

Just so, as you've said, it's phun..... Carter

Thanks guys..You have been very kind. My wife said it was PHun to put together and it took her almost an hour. She said she liked the variety of shapes, and the non locking pieces didn't cause a problem except when trying to pick up the finished puzzle.

I can hardly wait for my poplar to arrive [Yes it's ordered] so I can begin my next puzzles. I have some pics already chosen.

Mike dont sell yourself so short there buddy. You did an excellent job on this puzzle. As Carter says who cares about some pieces not interlocking. I still do that with freehand cuttin all the time.

That is a great start Mike. There are no hard rules about making puzzles that you have to follow. Each puzzle should be unique and if all pieces don't interlock that should make no difference. I like the idea of the ModPodge on the back of the puzzle to help with the tear out. I don't have much problem of it with the Okoume ply that I use but I tend to have more of a problem when I use BB ply. I will keep that in mind when I use BB next time.

I kinda told a fib....my first ever puzzles were some 6-8 piece stand up puzzles for kids years ago...But this is my first attempt at this type of jigsaw puzzle.

I did have the initial problems with wrinkling of paper etc...but you guys helped me figure out that problem so as soon as my order arrives I'll be gluing up the next one.

Bill,
why do you choose to use marine grade plywood for puzzles? Okoume ply

Mike,

Looking good! I know it seems scary the first time (I think my quote was "It was like Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, only I didn't die and go hell in the end"), but it only gets better from here. Keep on practicing and soon you'll be an old hand. And I'm with Carter, non-interlocking pieces can be considered making the puzzle "tricky". Especially on the edges.

John
