Hi all I want to make a family picture puzzle. What is the best finish to use over the picture to give a good hard wearing finish. I'm scared all the colours will run if I use a regular clear varnish. The picture is a family photo printed on glossy photo paper using an inkjet printer. Thanks . Mick

Mod podge is supposed to work for this application but if you have another photo that is not as near & dear to your heart try it on that one first. Others will have more information soon.

G'day Mick, The best route to go would be spraying the finish. I use a lacquer. I've found that the important thing to do is to make the first coat thin and fast. This sets the ink and prevents it from running when subsequent coats are applied. It's been along time since I've used a brush on printed stuff, but I think this was the way I eventually worked it out. Give the pic a spray with artist fixative 1st, then brush on the varnish. Don't muck around with the brush as you are applying it as if you work the finish the ink will run. Mick print out a couple of small pics and test. Hope this helps a little

Thanx guys I don't think I could get mod podge here Mike but there are sealants for decoupage, would they do? I think I'll go down the spray lacquer route John. Sounds simple and not too messy. Cheers guys Mick

Mick, mod podge is a decoupage glue and sealer. I love it. Carter, our puzzle guru, uses Triple Glaze spray. There are several brands available here, hopefully in England also. george
