Default more dinosaur puzzles

I finally found the time to reformat and post the pictures of the dinosaur puzzles I cut exclusively for my granddaughter over the last two weeks. The standup puzzles were all cut using #7 skip tooth blades at between 1500-1800 spm, using my Delta Q3, because it’s more aggressive with thick wood than the my Hawk. The Pteranodon was cut on my Hawk, lots of control needed (especially for the half-lap slots that hold the pieces together), using almost 2 dozen #5 reverse tooth blades and a single piece of 24 x 24” ¼ birch ply. What a tough ply to cut. It really dulls the blades quickly. I could cut only about 8 or ten slots or 4 small or 1 or 2 large pieces before changing blades. Fortunately, 8 or 9 of the pieces could be stack cut. It ended up almost 2’ long with a 4’ wingspan. It will stand on its beak and feet but is meant to be suspended from the ceiling. As usual, all comments and criticisms are welcome and thanks for letting me brag. The cutting details are as follows:

Cut from Judy and Dave Peterson’s book Dinosaur Puzzles for the SS.

Dinosaur # of pieces wood finish

Barosaurus 17 ¾ mahogany shellac
Stegosaurus 16 15/16 walnut gloss varnish
Cryolophosaurus 7 1 ¼ walnut gloss varnish
Allosaurus 9 1 ¼ walnut gloss varnish
Triceratops 12 1 ¼ walnut gloss varnish
Apatosaurus 14 1 ¼ walnut gloss varnish
Elasmosaur 8 7/8 walnut gloss varnish
In The Cretaceous 49 1/1/16 poplar acrylic paint and gloss varnish

Cut from my own design and patterns based on book and internet pictures.

Diplodocus 13 ¾ mahogany shellac
Pentaceratops 16 ¾ poplar shellac
Corythosaurus 11 ¾ mahogany shellac
Hadrosaurus 10 ¾ poplar shellac
Spinosaurus 11 15/16 walnut gloss varnish

Cut from a pattern in Danny Downs book Making Your Own Dinosaur Models

Pteranodon 28 ¼ birch ply none

Beautiful cuttings, and the display cards are a priceless addition. Great work.

I wished I had know how hard birch ply was to cut before I went out and purchased a supply of it. Man that stuff sure uses up blades. especially spiral blades.

Thanks for the kind words everybody. I really enjoyed cutting them and I am sure my granddaughter will enjoy playing with them also.
