Default Pattern request

I have had this picture of my cousins children for a while now and have been attempting to make a pattern, with very little success. My wife and I have their name for Christmas and I would like to cut this for them.

I have removed the background in GIMP and made a few attempts at the pattern. With my recent workload I have been unable to spend any time learning the program.

I will post the original picture and the first 2 stages of making the pattern. Hopefully one of you experts will have time to help me.
