I'm looking for some information on the Coyote design software. I want to buy software to learn how to design my own patterns but I don't want to waste money on something that doesn't work well or isn't too user friendly. Sue Walker (aka shadylady0447) says she uses PaintShop Pro and she does some awesome patterns. Adobe Photoshop is out of my budget range, so my choice will more than likely be between Paintshop Pro & Coyote. Does anyone here use Coyote and can you show me some patterns created on it or at least give some pro/cons about it?

The only program I use is Gimp. It really fits my budget (FREE!). Gives all the features I need for doing patterns.

Terry, go and take a look at the videos on u-Tube by Steve Good. There is one there on Coyote and many many other videos - mostly on Coel Draw. I've had Corel Draw for a long time but never been able to come to grips with it but after watching, and re-watching Steve's videos I'm starting to get excited about having the program. There is one video about the new Home /student version x4 as well. It's version is the full version as far as Steve can tell and makes the purchase of Core Draw much cheaper if you are employed within the Education System.

Be sure and check out Adobe Photoshop Elements. It comes free with a lot of scanner software and previous versions can be picked up on eBay for next to nothing. I do all my patterns with Photoshop and Elements has all the tools needed for professional pattern making. I have a tutorial on my website I can send you a link to if you want to read up a bit on it. Thanks everyone for the help. I've been watching all Steve Goods videos tonight. He makes them all look fairly easy. I going to try some trial versions and play around with them before I decide.

I used to design shadow portraits using Paint Shop Pro v9 but when I 'upgraded' to a Vista computer, PSP9 would no longer run. So I switched to the Gimp and, like Kevin, found it met my needs admirably. I'm still a big fan of Inkscape, an open source program which will suit pattern designers who want to use vector graphics but can't afford CorelDraw. In fact, earlier today I found myself with time on my hands while sitting at a computer so I ran through some of Steve Good's excellent CorelDraw video tutorials and found all the features he uses (those in the formative tutorials I watched, anyway) are there in Inkscape too. Mal, I think you'll find Coyote is designed for shadow portrait patterns rather than segmentation patterns. If you're having difficulties getting Inkscape to produce segmentation patterns, perhaps someone here might be able to help you. There's at least one other member who knows how to use the 'Trace Bitmap' function which will give you a head start in creating segmentation patterns, but I won't mention names . Even though Inkscape is a great asset, I've always found the creation of segmentation patterns to be fiddly and time consuming; it helps to learn how to create Bezier curves and manipulate vector nodes.Gill
