Default Art Show

Our local community college wants to get an Art Gallery started in the area. Before the actual building gets done, they wanted another way to promote local artists. I went to one meeting and had a discussion with a painter on what "fine art" was. His definition - it had to hang on a wall and not be functional. Enough said there....

This past weekend the college put on an Art Show for local artists. 2 parts to it:
Small Art - it had to fit in a clear, 5" x 7" envelope. No prints, less than $50 price tag, limited to 10 pieces per artist. The college took care of all of the sales and a 30% fee on items sold.
Fine Art - original art, Artist had to have been juried into a previous art show. Limited to the first 10 artists of each catagory (painting, wood, jewelry, sculpture...) with 3 pieces per artist.

I called about the Fine Art portion - wondered if I had to have created the actual design or if I could use other designers line drawings. I mentioned that other Art shows let me use patterns. I also mentioned I had been published (thanks Fox Chapel!). Sales would be handled between the buyer and seller direct.

I took in 4 pieces of small art - Inlay leaf with the scientific name scrolled below. and 3 pieces of Intarsia designed by Chrestensen Burghout Designs. I ended up selling 1 leaf inlay, and "Tweedle Dumb" - the chicken Intarsia. Not too bad I thought!

Sounds like they will be doing it again next year -so I will have to see what I can do with more than 4 weeks notice.

Congrats on the sales. Did you get an answer on the fine art thing or am I misreading your post? It sounds like they sold in the "Small Art" category.

They never said I couldn't put them in the fine art, and that's where I took the 3 larger pieces. So I guess it was OK.

1 small art and 1 fine art sold.

As it should be. The fact that a pattern is used should have no bearing on the originality of the piece. I know there's a couple of high-brow ones up this way that actually state right in their apps that no patterns are to be used. One goes so far as to say that photographs are not to be used as the basis for any of the items offered. Sheesh!
