Phil: Sorry, didn't mean to offend or hit any buttons. And no offense taken. If it is a craft show with no rules, it would be hard to break them. If a show for 'hand made' then any duplicator generated stuff wouldn't qualify. But then, will the sponsor/promoter enforce their rules? Anyway, I didn't buy a saw to become a copy machine operator. There will always be a market for originals. Cheers, Terry |

A very good and informative breakdown of the thread Phil. The real difference between hand crafted and automated re-creation is the fact that automated items turn out ALL the same...no personal touch to make each one just a little bit unique from the rest. I'm all for hand crafted...always was and always will be. Automation has it's place in mass produced duplication but not at a Craft Fair/competition advertising hand made crafts. To add a little levity to break up the thread. A "laser" scrollsaw would really have 2 good points. #1- NO Broken blades to scare the daylights out of you and #2...If you cut a finger...it would automatically be cauterized and no blood would ruin the work. LOL

The last craft show I was at featured a few stands with laser cut items. These items looked really good, but no one was buying them. People don't go to a craft show to purchase that "Made in China" look. I wouldn't worry about the competition cheating. Nobody wants to buy a cookie cutter craft. People are looking for items with character. In regard to the laser. I wouldn't mind having one to play around with. It sure would make some precision gears for my clock! I like to be crafty and then again, I'm all about technology too. I think there is a place for both.

| It sure is great that blades are so inexpensive. I just went through 8 cutting my latest project. I'm starting to realize I don't need so many different ones too. I can almost get by with just 5 different blades.

The progression from a hand fret saw to powered scroll saw seems a natural evolution compared to going from a bladed saw to a lazer guided by computer. It is similar to the carving siatuation the last sixty years. Most of what is now advertized as 'hand carved' is not. It is router reproduced from the Holy land, Germany, Bali, and elsewhere. Because most folks want a low price for what they consider a craft item, reproduction items are increasingly markatable and actual handcrafted ones considered too pricy. A shame.

There is NO laser scrollsaw. That is just a made up name. I am with Bob on that. It does not use blades but cuts with heat and leaves burn marks on wood.Mike

It's like the Matrix. The machines are actually taking over. I know I've heard somewhere that they are working on computers that do the digital version of creating, from music to graphics, and even rational thinking. Fortunatly, man is still the more sophisticated machine...<grin>.
