Scan them into the computer and save the originals.

Usually I photograph them and then just download them into the computer as a JPEG file. That way I can size them to whatever I want load some bigger paper into the printer and print just a few pages to tape together. Photos are quick and resizing is easy.

I'm a pattern junkie that never uses the originals.
Going to ebay now to see if I can score some back issues.

for the smaller ones, I scan and then print them out...

for some of the large ones, I'll take to work and copy them...

and for the larger intarsia ones like the Majestic Elk that I'm doing now, I use a light box to trace them. one of the problems with that is that the patterns on the back of the page sometimes gets in the way and it makes it hard to follow the right pattern.. I either have to turn off the light or remove the pattern to make sure I'm tracing the right lines...

Always copy the pattern and save the original. I will scan, photocopy, or trace with a light box, but I will never use the original. Scanning and copying those larger patterns might be a bit easier if the patterns were printed on 8x10 paper and deisgned to be put together to make the larger patterns similar to the way PosterRazor does this. See it here: PosteRazor - Make your own poster! Just a thought.
