I really enjoyed this issue and have to say my favorite is the fret pattern carving combination. Also the frames will be on my to do list. I mentioned the fret carving on your other site and only got one response so far. I will be interested to see if others do it and if it can be applied to say the Indian Fret patterns you have . Is that possible?

Default Carved Fretwork Article

Hello Irish: Glad to hear that you enjoyed my article. In general, you can apply carving techniques to any fretwork pattern. However, there are physical limitations. If you try to carve very detailed fretwork cut from very thin wood, the scrollwork will shatter. It is best to carve on wood that is at least 5/8 inch thick. BUT, as you increase the thickness of the wood, it becomes more difficult to cut a very detailed pattern. So, my recommendation would be to start with a simpler pattern on wood that is about 3/4 inch thick. As you become more comfortable with the process, you can increase the complexity of the pattern and use thinner wood. Always use very sharp carving bits on more detailed patterns.
If you want to see some other projects where I have used carving techniques on fretwork, look in my Scroller Gallery on this forum.

Dick,
Thanks so much for your reply I did go to your gallery and was amazed at your work. I really enjoy doing fret work but got away from it lately and have done more carving (caricatures and little guys) but after reading your article I am sure I will get back to scrolling and trying your style of carving. I have a dremel hope that is good enough.

f250 I was looking at the projects you were putting in the state fair and am really impressed with your work. I was not aware that the plane and the car was Dicks method. I think I first looked at it before I read the article because I couldn't figure out what was different from the pictures.I didn't put the two together. Dick has already e-mailed me with some good advice and I am anxious to try one .A couple projects to finish first. Won't be able to make the state fair about the only time I go to Albuquerque in when my daughter has to go to the VA hospital also nine dollars a person is kind of high for us especially with gas prices .
Good Luck

Hi Dick, After looking at the Wolves and the Black Bear I'd be interested to know what was the thickness of the wood you used? I was thinking with that type of relief carving 1/4 to 3/8" would be needed. Magic

Hello, Magic The Timber Wolves were cut from 5/8" black cherry and the Black Bear was cut from 3/4" oak. Dick
