I made a simple light box to copy the patterns. It is a 3x3' plywood base with 3/4" x 4"high plywood sides. on the base I installed three 18' floresent lights along 3 sides all wired to a switch on the out side. A small frame with plexi-glass covers the top. I just lay it on the counter or table to use.
I redo all the patterns I use because I find it a lot easier to cut with red lines.
If it is bigger than a regular printer page, I also draw straight dotted lines in a different colour. These lines mark a size just smaller than a printer paper. So when I scan useing these guide lines and then reprint them I can put the sheets together for the pattern no matter what scale I use. I do a lot of Bald Eagles that sell well here. This method worked on 1 eagle that was 6' across.
I also use Staples store print center if the pattern is just a bit over normal page size, they print real cheap.

Office Depot is also a great spot to print from, they have 11x17 and a little larger and man are they cheap. I go to Kinko's when I have to to for even larger stuff, it cost a little more, but reasonable I suppose.

So if it was a pdf pattern and larger than 8.5x11 then I'd end up at Kinko's probably anyways.
