Default Tape preference

Here's a poll that we'll post in the upcoming issue.

Do you put the tape under or over the pattern.

I tried putting the tape over the pattern once but as I was cutting, the sawdust came up and I couldn't see the lines for cutting. Turned out to be a real pain. So now if I use it I put it under the pattern.

Under the pattern for the same reason as Sherri.

I used to put it under the pattern, but decided that with the many fragile pieces on the projects I do, it was better to just use spray adhesive and apply the pattern directly to the wood and use mineral spirits to take off the pattern.
Plus it is cheaper.

over the pattern, all i used was prit to stick the pattern down and it didn't do a great job, pieces kept flying off , so i have just started using spray glue and it seems really good.

I go over the pattern. Have found it eazier to remove tape and pattern at the same time. I usually spray a light coat of adhesive on the pattern and the packing tape I use is stronger than this so both pattern and tape come off at removal.

Have tried it both ways and there were too many times that either I broke a piece off my cutting or I missed a bit of tape and didn't find it until I was finishing. That made a sticky mess trying to get off. My eyes are not as good as they used to be and often I sanded right over a chunk of tape with out knowing it.

For those who use tape under the pattern, it is blue painters tape or clear packing tape.

Does anyone use blue tape under and clear tap on top? Overkill?

I tape under the pattern, except for compund cuts, where I tape over the pattern, because you have to keep adding tape. Having said that, I have recently seen jigs for easier compound cutting and I am gonna give that a try.

I use purple tape under and clear on top.
If sawing thin wood up to 3/8" thick all that I use is the purple (gentle release) tape .
For thicker wood or stack sawing I use both and don't feel that it is overkill at all because it just makes everything so much easier in so many ways.

Some say that sawdust is getting under the clear packaging tape. To cure that, just get a rag and rub hard on the piece after applying the tape. The heat generated will bond the tape to the pattern quite nicely.

I only use clear scotch tape to stick down the flappers. I have tried clear tape over and under the pattern. Under the pattern it is to hard to get off and some of the fragile parts break off. Over the pattern, other than cutting down on burn a little, It don't much help. I just spray glue to the back of the pattern and use sprites to take if off ,if it wont peel off clean.
