I use blue painters tape under (haven't had any luck finding the purple for some reason around here) and clear over the pattern. So technically, for me it's both. I secure my stacks as well with the blue tape so it serves 2 purposes.

I use both. Blue tape under, and clear tape over. This is what has worked the best for me.

Hummm, it won't let me vote for both.....

Default under only

I use "cheap" clear packing tape under the pattern. Never had a problem with it damaging my scroll work when removing, and seems to remove better than when the pattern is attached directly to the wood. I tried it on top of the pattern a couple of times and did not see any real benefit to it, but it did make the lines hard to see at times as Sherri indicated.

I use clear tape under the pattern for intarsia so I can see the wood grain and to keep sawdust from obscuring the line as it can do when on top of the pattern. I use blue or purple tape under the pattern for fretwork, that tape comes off easier and I don't necessarily need to see the grain. I personally don't like removing the pattern after being put directly on the wood, I did that too long. I also don't cut fretwork that is overly fragile. The most fragile things I've cut were Christmas ornaments and I had no trouble with blue tape.

I use purple painters tape under the pattern....use a glue stick for the pattern.
Jediscroller have you tried WalMart? That's where I get my purple painters tape.

I use spray adhesive under and clear packing tape on top. To prevent the lines that collect sawdust you set the end of the tape down nice and straight and apply no pressure with the hand holding the tape and use your free hand to smooth the tape down over the pattern.

I use green painters tape...one in every crowd. Then I put the pattern on top. I found it easier to remove the pattern and tape at the same time.
I used to go over the pattern but it is still a pain to remove some of the residual glue when doing it that way.

I use the cheap dollar store, or Harbor Freight clear packaging tape. It seems the cheaper the clear tape, the easier it peels back off, especially if its been on the wood a while. Dont use the brown colored packaging tape directly on the wood, it makes for a nasty, messy disappointing time of removal DAMHIKT! Dale

I use both. Painter's tape under, clear over for Portraits or fretwork. Normally just clear under for Intarsia.
