Default Spring 2008 - Issue #30

Hello All,

I know there have been some other threads started about the issue already, but I came into several fox sightings this morning, so I figured it was time to start the official thread.

I'm not looking for whether or not you received the issue - what I want to know is once you have received it and looked through it - what do you think?

Which articles you liked, which articles you didn't like - and why.

Did you enjoy the new department on the last page?

We should probably open up communication about the news on the editor's page as well. Our subscription database is going to be handled by a fulfillment company in California. A few folks have already called with concerns that they were being scammed... It's not a scam... Your subscription payment will now be sent to Escondido, CA. This change should not affect your service in any way. If you have any trouble or concerns, please let us know. This change allows us to focus on what we do best - putting together your magazine. The new company will focus on what they do best - data entry, reporting, and subscription fulfillment...

Also note that US newsstand price is increasing to $6.99 per copy. Subscription rates are not being affected.

Okay - now that the housekeeping is out of the way... On to the good stuff...

Our own Troy Thorne (Creative Director) makes his SSW debut with the Off-Road Racing Jeep. My husband and son are currently undertaking their second Pinewood Derby, (which I'm trying to stay out of!) but even if you don't have a boy scout in your family - the Jeep is a really cool project and I'm sure it would be a good seller at craft shows.

I just love John Nelson's votive holders. They're really a simple project, but they're both beautiful and functional - another good sale item!

What did you guys think of the Dollar Store article? I thought Toni provided some excellent advice to save you a few $$ - I know the next time I'm at the Dollar Store, I'll have a different perspective.

I could go on and on - but I want to hear from you - give me the good, the bad and the ugly...

Well ain't you just a little tease! You tell us not to say whether or not we got the issue but then go on about what those of us who haven't gotten it yet are missing! The previews were bad enough before but now you have me wanting to choke my mailman asking him where my issue is as he slowly turns blue!

Be gentle - remember the holidays are in there and that does tend to slow down the mailmen!

My copy came in today and I was really excited to get into it. This one came wrapped in plastic. Was there supposed to be something else included with it? Maybe a catalog or advertising flyer like some magazines do sometimes? At least it kept the mail man from leafing through it this time.

So far I've only leafed through it and scanned a couple of the articles. I did however read through the 'Sawdust' on the last page. While I didn't personally get anything out of this particular section I did see how it could be very useful for people looking for alternate choices for attaching patterns. I'm sure it will be very useful to most people as you cover other subjects throughout the year.

As usual it's not packed full of stuff that has me running out to the shop to make, but I am itching to get started on a couple of them as soon as I can. It does have a great variety of projects for all skill levels in fretwork as well as intarsia so I can't see how anybody couldn't find something in this issue to make.

I think I'm going to head on out to the Dollar Store tomorrow and look for some of those glass votive holders Toni mentioned so I can make a couple of the votive holders by John Nelson. And the Derby Car is a great projects for kids that are interested in scrolling whether they are a scout or not.

Great job on another wonderful issue!!

I subscribed on November 28 last year, and I'm still waiting to receive my first issue!
My brain is starting to dry up...

My copy came in yesterday's mail and I have my work cut out for me.
The issue is full of projects and information that I find useful for the direction that my scrolling is taking.

The Spring songbirds and Kathy's spirited Colt will have to be made.
The Jeep for my Grand nephew (or me) just for a fun project.
The votive holder is another quick and fun project.

I also look forward to reading the coloring with acrylics article as this is a current issue with how my wife and I color some of the Christmas ornaments we make and sell. I tend to like a wash she likes solid colors.

I also like the stylized mask.

Bottom line this issue has a lot more projects that really appeal to me than ones that don't.
There are projects that should challenge all skills.

What I really like is that so many of our forum members are represented with articles in the magazine. That tells me that you are really listening to us.

Oh I also NEED to make lots of the pocket puzzle.

Got mine but haven't "studied" it yet. Browsing through I learned something from every article even though I may not cut it. Just keeps getting better and better.

It's ok with me that you are talking about it, Shannon since I received my copy early last week.
